Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General FAQs

  • What services are available at Level Up Tutoring?

We offer private one-on-one tutoring, ACT Prep, and SAT Prep. See the Services page for details.

  • What is your background?

My background is in math. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with a minor in Psychology and a Master of Science in Applied Statistics, both from DePaul University.

  • What’s the difference between teaching and tutoring?

The main difference is that teachers present new material to students, while tutors support material a student has already seen before.

  • What is your tutoring ideology/theory?

Asking for help can be a very vulnerable experience for a child. My main goal is to ensure that my students feel safe, comfortable, respected, and supported. Once this is achieved, my focus is determining where a student needs support in their math education and my approach is specific to their needs, skill level, and goals.

  • What subjects do you tutor?

I tutor all subjects of math for students K-12 (excluding Multivariate Calculus). I also offer tutoring services for all subjects for students K-6.

  • What can we expect from the first tutoring session?

The first tutoring session is an assessment session. This session is likely to include very little time to actually work on homework/class material. The information gathered during this assessment session is vital to understanding the best methods to use when tutoring your student.

  • How much does private tutoring cost?

Our fee is $50 per hour for one-on-one tutoring. Discounts are available - see the Discounts page for details.

  • How long are sessions and how frequently should my student have tutoring sessions?

The standard recommendation is half-hour long sessions twice per week for students K-6 and one-hour long sessions once per week for students 7-12. As more information is gathered, the frequency and length of sessions is adjusted to meet your student’s needs.

Prep should begin approximately 8 weeks before the test date and there is a required minimum of 6 sessions per section for the ACT/SAT. ACT/SAT Prep is not math or science tutoring. These sessions are dedicated to understanding the exam, learning and trying different strategies, and identifying areas that need additional studying. Students should plan to do 15 minutes of practice problems per day for the 8 weeks leading up to the exam.

  • Where should I park when I arrive?

Street parking is free and available directly in front of our home.

  • What should I do when I arrive for my session?

If the front door is open, students may enter our house and wait in the foyer. For sessions prior to 7 PM, you may ring the doorbell if the front door is closed. For sessions scheduled at or after 7 PM, please send a text that you have arrived and refrain from ringing the doorbell.

  • Do you have any pets?

Yes, we have two cats, Chewy (short for Chewbacca) and Treble. Chewy is friendly and likes people. Students can request that Chewy be in the office with us, but he will need to leave if he is causing a distraction. If your child is allergic to or hesitant around cats, please let us know in the New Families form and we will ensure no cats are in the office during their sessions.

  • Do you offer snacks for students?

Yes, snacks, candy, and water are available for students if they get hungry during their session. If your child has any food allergies or you would prefer they not partake in certain foods, please let us know in the New Families form.
